“Se vogliamo che tutto rimanga com’è, bisogna che tutto cambi.”

The paradox of immobility under the guise of transformation.

“If we want everything to stay as it is, everything must change.”

The celebrated line from Il Gattopardo by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa—spoken by Tancredi—condenses the political and social pragmatism that preserves the status quo through apparent or tactical change. Its relevance is not merely historical: today it serves as a critical mirror of contemporary political dynamics.

The revival of this idea in the work Il Gattopardo received notable attention in Rome: its A/P (artist’s proof)version, exhibited at a Empegno Gallery in Bracciano, Italy, was warmly received by the local public, in line with the phrase’s deep cultural resonance in Italy. This response reaffirms its strength as a cultural and political symbol.

In the Chilean context, its universal reach—and its ironic deployment in so-called “Gattopardist” discourse—makes it equally effective, even for those unaware of its origin. It operates as a critical call to discern between cosmetic changes and genuine transformation.
